“What About First Oscars For You?”

Egyptian journalist Shaimaa Abdel Moneim, who was sent by Al Youm7, sparked a wave of laughter in the room after asking that incomprehensible question to Leonardo DiCaprio at the 2016 Academy Awards ceremony. People criticized Al Youm7 for sending someone who does not speak English fluently to cover such an important event. They also criticized Abdel Moneim for not having prepared a good question, for her bad accent, and for lack of self confidence adding that she did not miss a chance to take photos of herself with celebrities’ statues. However, some Egyptians have supported her saying that she only got confused and this could happen to anyone. Despite the fact that she was not enough qualified for this task, the humiliation and criticism she received for her performance was exaggerated and impolite somehow as this affected her family. People could have criticized the performance but not the person herself. She said that she sinned against herself and her country and that she received an opportunity and missed it because of her lack of experience. It is clear that from her words she admitted that she was not enough qualified and she has no experience but also, she promised that she will learn from this lesson and her work on herself to be better. She could learn from her mistake without the humiliation which she received from people. At the end of the day, we are all humans and have mistakes and as long as we are living, we continue to learn more and more from our mistakes.
